Neutral Milk Hotel is an indie band formed by Jeff Mangum in the 1980’s, comprised of: Mangum, Scott Spillane, Julian Koster, and Jeremy Barnes. The band is known for its folksy guitar playing and eccentric musical style. It has been mentioned in pop culture as a favorite band of a character in John Green’s novel “Will Grayson, Will Grayson,” as well as the favorite band of the character April Ludgate (played by Aubrey Plaza) on the show Parks and Recreation. They have influenced many successful bands, including: Franz Ferdinand, Bright Eyes, and Arcade Fire. Their first full-length album On Avery Island was released in 1994, but they became more well-known in the indie world after the release of their 2nd album “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.” It’s almost impossible to verbally describe this band, so I’ll let them do it in their own words through one of their most well-known songs: In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.
