Throwback Thursday: The Arrival of Arctic Monkeys

On this day in 2006, the newly acclaimed band “Arctic Monkeys” burst onto the music scene with 4 nominations at the Q awards, one of the UK’s biggest annual music awards ceremonies. Formed in 2002, the Sheffield-born and bred band rose to fame with the fastest-selling debut album in British history: “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.” At the awards, they were nominated for: Best Album, Best Track, Best New Act, and Best Live Act. Their debut album won them the award for Best Album and after that, they began releasing consistently new and versatile music with each progressive album. Aside from the Q Awards, they have been nominated for Brit Awards (winning 7 times) and Grammy Awards. The indie rock band is known for its heavily accented frontman and lead vocalist Alex Turner, whose rapid-fire deliverance of lyrics distinguishes the band from any other and makes it one of my all-time favorites. The debut album has since gone quintuple platinum and is often praised as one of the best rock albums of the decade. Although each album has vastly different songs, one of their most distinctive and identifying songs remains “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor,” from their very first album.
