Artist Spotlight: Sam Hunt

Written by on March 13, 2015

Everyone knows the story of the small town boy who then makes the move to Nashville and becomes a country star right? Well Sam’s story might have started in the small town of Cedartown, Georgia but his storyline has a couple twists. The son of an insurance agent and a teacher, Hunt grew up playing sports and held multiple awards for playing football in high school. He then went on to become quarterback for Middle Tennessee State and the University of Alabama. After graduating, Sam was invited to the Kansas City Chiefs’ training camp but after his football career failed to take off, and that’s when he made the move and decided to pursue music.

Sam Hunt wrote Keith Urban’s single “Cop Car,” and Billy Currington’s “We Are Tonight,” as well as co-writing Kenny Chesney’s “Come Over.” In 2014 he signed with MCA Nashville and since then he has released his album Montevallo which debuted at number 1 on Top Country Albums and at number 3 on Billboard’s top 200.

Hunt has pushed the boundaries of country music by incorporating his R&B and Pop influences into his music along with some spoken word which Sam manages to transition smoothly into his sound. A lot of people criticize him for “ruining country music” by bringing in outside sounds but his music is expanding the reach of the old country genre and bringing in some new fans.

I highly recommend the tracks “Break Up In A Small Town,” “Ex To See,” and if you’re curious on the spoken word, definitely take a listen to Sam’s single “Take Your Time.”

Sam Hunt is currently on the last dates of the Lipstick Grafitti tour and will be heading out with Lady Antebellum and Hunter Hayes this summer.
You can catch Sam in our neck of the woods next week in Austin Texas where he will be playing 3 showcases at the SXSW music festival.
