SXSW: Spoon Takes the Stage at Auditorium Shores

Written by on March 21, 2015

The biggest show, attendance wise, that SXSW has had to offer was Spoon this past Thursday at Auditorium Shores. The show was free for wristband and badge holders and they were handing out guest passes for the general public. The park was filled; there were pets and kids in the mix, so it was the most family friendly event to attend.

Spoon took the stage a little after seven and played favorites such as “Do You,” “Don’t Make Me a Target,” ‘Don’t You Evah,” and my favorite, “I Turn My Camera On.” Near the stage was crowded elbow to elbow, but the further back you went there were people comfortably lounging on blankets, treating the concert as a picnic. The concert was so lively and the band expressed several times that the free show was the best. They were happy everyone was able to enjoy the concert. Keyboardist Alex Fischel even went to say he was having a really bad day.

“I was walking on the street and some guy comes up to me and says, ‘Don’t look so fat bro.’.” What a cruel world, I’m glad to be a part of the crowd that made his day a little bit brighter.

The ending of the concert was accompanied by a huge fireworks show. A friend had just picked me up and we were heading to park and see a few other small shows. The feeling was surreal. It felt as if we were not supposed to be in a car. There were pedicab drivers doing tricks next to us, a roller derby team skating by, and the line at The Belmont for Incubus taking up more than a block. It was the craziest night I would have to say.
