Concert Review: Fitzgerald’s Welcome’s Back Neon Indian

Neon Indian 022

Last night, Neon Indian came through Houston and people were lined up and ready to move. Early in the set, he said it had been a few years since he’d been in Houston and he was happy and gracious for everyone who came to see him.

It has been 4 1/2 years since we’ve had a Neon Indian album. The smash hit album Era Extana brought us such singles as “Polish Girl” and “Attack” and the debut album Psychic Chasms spawned “Deadbeat Summer” and “Terminally Chill.” Rest assured those songs and more were played at full volume with aesthetic lighting and soft vocals.

In the best sense, this is as close as our generation can come to be being in disoc-techs in the 80s. From the music, to the lighting, to the crowd, the immersive experience he creates sonically and visually is both mystical and dream-like. The mix of the band and his vocals was top notch and every song sounded just like the records but better. From songs off his soon-to-be-released album Vega Intl. Night School like “Slumlord,” “Baby’s Eyes,” and “Annie” to classics like “Mind, Drips” and “Polish Girl,” he kept the audience entranced and excited the whole night.

Overall the crowd was energized and glad to be back in the Fitzgerald’s space after a hiatus due to changing management. Neon Indian performed with high energy and a locked-in band to boot. Neon Indian 030

Check out this Spotify playlist “Songs of the Slumlord” which Neon Indian curated and don’t forget to check out his new album Vega Intl. Night School when it drops on October 16th!
