Artist Spotlight: BreakItDownDC

Written by on June 14, 2016

BreakItDownDC is a dope new hip-hop artist out of Houston, TX. His love for music started very young. He took music classes in elementary school and was classically trained in Choir and orchestra. His music is very creatively crafted telling “Life stories with mad auto tune to get out the pretty melodies” as he said in our interview. Mostly painting pictures of dark feelings with very vibrant drums and beautiful melodies.

His musical influences include Lil Wayne, Future, Drake, Childish Gambino, the Weeknd and PARTY NEXT DOOR. He writes all his own music contrary to the ghost writing trends of the genre as of late. For those unfamiliar with the HipHop genre, simply put its a subcultural movement that was formed during the early 1970s by African-American, Caribbean, and Latino youths residing in the South Bronx in New York City.

Houston had a big influence on the culture with its chopped and screwed type beats and disc jockey mixes. BreakItDownDC is part of a new ungerdround music movement in Houston on the come up called “Houstock.” There are a plethora of talented artist in the collective. Singers, rappers, producers and DJs as well. He released a song on June 11th called “Lituation” the link will be posted below.
