Coming in as featured “artist du jour”, CoogRadio.com presents the spotlight on Soul Creatures, a local six-piece band, bringing on the funk to Houston’s night life vibes.

They lurk in the shadows, capturing every move you make. Every song they play is lined with a velvet puissant funk. Their presence is cat-like, while their sound produces a vital “thump” throughout the night. Born and bred within the local music scene, Soul Creatures bring a funky, outrageous and quite contagious groove to the streets of Houston.

“Forging, maintaining, and igniting a musical connection through deep grooves and funky moves drives us to create the most energetic and infectious stage show we can imagine. We want to share our love for funk music with all our friends in the Creature Nation, sharing our motto: “Funk Heals” with as many people as possible, and dancing with the audience and each other, until we all collapse from exhaustion, of course!” – Soul CreaturesSoul Creature Logo

The idea for the group came when bassist Sergio Vazguez, his stage name (Latin Creature), started a project called “Traffic Jamz” as an audio engineering student at Houston Community College. With the help of his peers, he was able to develop a foundation within HCC’s recording studios. It wasn’t until trumpeter Rochelle Sloan (Princess Creature) and vocalist Russ Martinez (Doctor Creature) joined the band, that they officially formed the Creature sound .

With the help of fellow creatures alike, Drew Wolod (Red Vanilla) on drums, Jim Edmonds (Pickles Creature) on guitar, and Charles Thomas (Saxy Creature) on saxophone, they launched from being a Thursday night act at Montrose venue, Avant Garden, to venues all across the city. You can see them performing their song “Red Vanilla” below.
