The Maryland emcee’s latest project was released to Apple Music Thursday night with no prior announcement.

Bobby Tarantino, an 11-track mixtape, is Logic’s first project since the release of his sophomore album in November.

In more ways than one, this mixtape is different from much of Logic’s previous work. For starters, Bobby Tarantino is a party record and isn’t something one would expect from a mostly lyrical rapper who has been compared to the likes of J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar.

The mixtape also lacks a unifying theme. Where Under Pressure and The Incredible True Story exist within the same fictional universe and are tied to Logic’s Young Sinatra mixtapes through a shared narrative, Bobby Tarantino breaks free of this and presents itself as simply braggadocious, bombastic rap.

The mixtape doesn’t pride itself on being lyrical, or even perfect—one song in particular is reminiscent of Lamar’s Untitled Unmastered—but none of that is a bad thing.

Those unfamiliar with Logic’s music can appreciate this mixtape as tracks like “Flexicution,” “Wrist” and “44 Bars” give them a well-rounded view of the rapper. Seasoned fans can enjoy Bobby Tarantino as a project to tide them over until Logic puts out his third album—which is rumored to be released later this year.
