Artist Spotlight: Young Deji

When you hear Young Deji sing and flow on his song “High Definition” you’re going to feel like all your haters are mad. He delivers very soulful melodies and rhymes that you can really feel. Deji is a Houston native of Nigerian descent hailing from the southwest side, specifically the Alief area, where he attended middle and high school. His love of music started when he was eight-years-old, his older sisters moved to the United States and with them they brought great sounds such as ; Toni Braxton , Tevin Campbell , Mariah Carey and much more. “They played it every morning and night, I knew all the lyrics like they were mine,” he said. This is what inspired him to make his first song ,”Slept In Weeks”, in the 6th grade. He is also inspired by Hip-Hop artists such as; Tupac , Biggie Smalls, J. Cole, Kendrick and Asap Rocky. As well as Houston Hip-hop artist like Maxo Kream, Z-Ro ,Trae the Truth and the Sauce twins. In high school, he was a part of varsity choir where he won first place for his solo assembly as a freshman at a competition held at the University of Texas at Austin. He absorbs his originality and swagger from artists like Tupac and Biggie who had their own lane and styles. “They taught me to be original and do my own thing,” he said. He describes his sound as a melting pot of genres such as R&B, hip-hop, trap and jazz. Click on the track above and have a listen for yourself.
