5 Songs to FALL in Love To

Written by on October 30, 2019

Fall, the time where leaves, temperature, and general motivation for the semester drops. Don’t worry this isn’t a poem, but autumn or “cuffing season” wouldn’t fit the pun in the title. The charm of summer wears off,  you realize that you could flesh out your romantic life because you made it past mid-terms. Here are some songs to “autumn” in love to (see what I did there?).

Jens Lekman– Kanske är jag kär i dig

For anyone who can’t speak Swedish, the song’s title translates to “Maybe I’m in love with you”. Jens Lekman is one of the most, if not, the wittiest songwriter I’ve ever had the privilege of listening to. In the song, Jens sings from the point of view of a guy who fell head over heels for someone and struggles talking to them (relatable!). “All I think about is kissing you, an old feeling that feels refreshingly new”.

The Magnetic Fields– Nothing Matters When We’re Dancing

Off the album, “69 Love Songs,” Nothing Matters When We’re Dancing is an intimate, stripped down ballad of blissfully ignoring the bustle of life to enjoy your time with that special someone. “Among the dreadful tunes / the awful songs we don’t even hear.” With holidays and deadlines approaching / wouldn’t you want to take a step back and appreciate the moments together?

Belle and Sebastian– Asleep on a Sunbeam

One of the reasons “Asleep on a Sunbeam” is a standout track from “Dear Catastrophe Waitress” is because Sarah Martin is the main vocalist of the song rather than Stuart Murdoch. Martin starts off the song being the sole vocalist. Murdoch then fades into the song and fleshes out the “couple looking for a get away” narrative. “I could watch the dreams flicker in your eyes / lying here asleep on a sunbeam / I wonder if you realize you fascinate me so”.

Chris Farren- The Way That I Love U Has Changed

One of the best singles of 2018, The Way That I Love U Has Changed captures the realization that the love for his partner is growing every day. Farren is beyond creative the way he captures his emotions in this song. “We couldn’t speak but I touched your hand / You were smiling with your eyelids loosening the elastic band”. The bridge of the song contains the most heartwarming lyrics I’ve ever heard. “We watched the northern lights convulse / I could barely make them out but you were so enthralled / So I stared at your reflection in the glass / How could there ever be a sight better than that?”.

Joyce Manor- Falling in Love Again

So far on the list we’ve just had sappy, artsy love songs. What about a song that just simply illustrate the looming dread of realizing that you’re falling in love once again? Joyce Manor hits it out the park with the delivery of the lyrics as if to parallel one squeezing out the realization of falling for someone. “I think you’re funny / I like your friends / I like the way they treat you / I’ve got some money / That we could spend / Not that you’re like that / I’m falling in love again”.
