The Replacements are an ’80s punk rock/alternative outfit from Minneapolis, Minnesota, whose claim to fame is drinking and a “100 steps forward and 99 steps back” approach to success. Like all great rock acts before them, they developed a fairly extensive rock mythology before disbanding in 1991. Real, verified stories include almost getting the entire Warner Bros. label […]

It is not unheard for bands to gain and release members throughout their musical run, but it is almost unheard of for a band to reach up to 15 members, let alone borrowing members from more than five bands at once. Broken Social Scene is exactly what their name implies, it is a group of […]

Venues have to put up warning signs when this band comes into town. It’s best if you bring a poncho to their shows, if you don’t want to get messy. If you like your hearing, you might as well walk in with a pair of earplugs. Fresh out of high school, Starcrawler is one of […]

Imagine a longboard cruising down a cement boardwalk. To your left is an expanse of sand. Off the pace is the ocean, refracting the rays of the sun. It’s beginning to set. You’ve got your sunglasses on, but you can still see that the sky is a mix of rich oranges, yellows and pinks. The […]

This past weekend was a fantastic weekend for one of Houston’s best venues, Walter’s. We start off on Saturday which included two great bands, Bully and Smut, that eventually lead to two stunning performances. The night was opened by the Cincinnati noise-pop and shoegaze five-piece better known as Smut. Consisting of singer Taylor Roebuck, Andrew Min, […]

Perfume Genius is the stage name of the talented singer/songwriter that is Mike Hadreas. Hailing from Washington state, Hadreas dropped out of high school his senior due to the constant abuse, on account of being homosexual, from the high school football team and lack of action from the school. He was assaulted by a group […]

It fascinates me sometimes how artists who have been performing for over a decade still manage to put on a super energetic show and light up crowds of all sizes. The Sunday show at House of Blues was no exception with Spoon, an Austin band formed in 1993, rocking out so hard you’d never guess […]

Formed in 2010 by Will Toledo, Car Seat Headrest started off as a small indie venture by the Virginian native. Cranking out album after album, Toledo soon grew to internet fame through Bandcamp and even had a run-in with the music boards of 4chan. Toledo captured the lo-fi sound while writing melancholic, introspective lyrics, and […]

Austin is a city known for its music scene so it’s not surprising that talent brews on the streets and big names have started out there. Spoon is a rock band from ATX that formed in 1993 and has seen much success over the years. Lead singer and guitarist Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno […]

If you’re looking for an extremely diverse musician, look no further than Alex Giannascoli, an artist who simply cannot be defined into just one genre. More commonly known as (Sandy) Alex G, the multi-instrumentalist dubbed “Internet’s secret best songwriter” by Fader began his musical career writing and recording music from his own home in Pennsylvania […]

This past Sunday Josh Tillman (as Father John Misty) took the lawn stage at the White Oak Music Hall as part of his Pure Comedy Tour. With Weyes Blood as an opener, this concert gave every Misty fan in Houston the show they’d been waiting for since his new album dropped, and also gave the […]

It’s been a busy year for Josh Tillman (aka Father John Misty). He has toured Europe and North America, performed on Saturday Night Live, and on Tuesday recorded a live album at Third Man Records. All of this has been to support his album Pure Comedy, released earlier this year. The 74 minute double album […]

A unique blend of folk and indie pop, Angel Olsen broke on the scene as a touring member for Bonnie “Prince” Billy. Her debut LP Half Way Home (2012) was a critical success, an emotional folk album focused around Olsen’s striking voice and acoustic guitar. Her sound expanded with her next work Burn Your Fire […]

Throughout the past few years, Coog Radio has sent me to several festivals. They have sent me to Fun Fun Fun Fest, Austin City Limits, Day for Night and several more. None of those festivals come close to anything I experienced at Buku. Buku is more than just your typical music festival; it has […]

Everything is put out on the dance floor, as southern California’s alternative-indie rockers, Young the Giant, release their newest album, Home of the Strange (2016). An album with a glossy and ethereal sound that stimulates the ear with infectious melodies and innovative production elements.

Currently on tour for her newest album, Puberty 2, Mitski is taking us along her journey dealing with anxiety, love, and heartbreak. Although the journey is sad and not the most upbeat, she instills a sense of confidence and the ability to overcome all the obstacles we endure.
