The UFO Club

Texas serves as a hub that covers a lot of music scenes and subcultures. Whether it be post-rock (EITS, This Will Destroy You), hip-hop (DJ Screw, Bun B, Pimp C, etc), or folk/americana/country (Willie Nelson, Robert Ellis, Hayes Carl, etc), Texas’ musical roots go pretty deep, but arguably not as deep as its roots in psychedelic rock. With bands like The 13th Floor Elevators, Red Krayola and Golden Dawn pioneering psychedelia in music, Texas psych-rock is lived on with bands like The Black Angels, who co-curate Austin Psych Fest, one of the genre’s largest festivals.

Christian Bland of The Black Angels and Lee Blackwell of Night Beats have their debut self-titled album out under their joint moniker The UFO Club. You can hear the first track, “July,” above, which is a hauntingly tremolo’d out piece near-perfect in capturing the psychedelic nature of a Texas summer, each guitar hook melting away much like your sweat glands do on a typical “hot-as-balls” day in Houston.

The UFO Club is out now on The Reverberation Appreciation Society (streaming here via Consequence of Sound) , which the band is celebrating this Wednesday the 15th at Red 7. Though The UFO Club won’t be playing in town for the release, you can catch Lee Blackwell with Night Beats tonight, August 13th at Fitzgerald’s with Infinite Apaches and Pharoahs. Click the picture to see what you’re in for.
