Throwback Thursday: Coheed and Cambria, Archie Bell, and Wu-Tang (for the children)

TT - website rises

Throwback Thursday is a (hopefully) weekly column bringing you some “old school” music every Thursday. It is designed to enlighten the young, please our target demographic, and make the old feel even older.

Well, here we are… a brand spanking new blog on a brand spanking new website. We sincerely hope you enjoy what you see, because we’ve worked hard on it. You’re just seeing the end result, but we’ve spent countless hours coding, refining, editing, and cursing WordPress to the most fiery pits of hell itself from the very depths of our angry and frustrated souls.

Okay, that last one might’ve just been me, but whatever.

This begins our first Throwback Thursday on the new Coog Radio blog, and let’s start off with some weird prog-rock-metal-punk-whatever the hell you call Coheed and Cambria.

The album I’ve spent the past two weeks listening to is In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 by Coheed and Cambria. Trust me, there have been countless late nights listening to this record and yelling CHASE IT’S YOU I WANT while trying to enter in show information into our schedule (which you should check out, because it’s awesome). I still remember buying this album in a tiny record store in Canada all the way back in 2003. Yes, I know you were most likely in elementary school in that year. Yes, this makes me an old man. Yes, this makes me sad. Certainly C&C (not the Music Factory) have changed members and changed their sound multiple times in the past decade, but IKSoSE:3 remains a classic. The single off that album that everybody remembers is A Favor House Atlantic:

More old school goodness after the jump.

You might want to ask your grandparents about this next one. Archie Bell and the Drells essentially put Houston on the map with Tighten Up. Millions around the country were doing the “Tighten Up” (I assume this to be the case… I’m not THAT old). It even spawned it’s own dance (or un-dance as the case warrants) craze a few years ago. At the very least, it’s perhaps the coolest song from the 60’s that name drops H-town.

Finally, avid hip-hop heads already know that last week saw the release of U-God’s Keynote Speaker. Most will remember him from landmark group Wu-Tang Clan. At least, I hope you do. If you don’t, you need to remember a few things:

1. Wu-Tang is for the children.
2. Diversify your bonds.
3. Wu-Tang ain’t nothing to f— with.

Perhaps their most famous song is on Enter The 36 Chambers, called Protect Ya Neck:
