Austin Psych Fest Artist Spotlight: A Place To Bury Strangers

Written by on April 15, 2015

A Place to Bury Strangers is a New York City-based noise rock band consisting of guitarist and frontman Oliver Ackermann, bassist Dion Lunadon, and drummer Robi Gonzalez. The band employs a wall-of-sound approach to their brand of  atmospheric shoegaze, psychedelic, and space rock. After a performance at Webster Hall with the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the band achieved a significant amount of notoriety which led to the release of their first self-titled album in 2007.

Their first release, A Place to Bury Strangers, was comprised of songs written between 2004-2006 and released as a series of EPs that were sold at their live shows. They quickly gained the attention of the owner of the small Killer Pimp label, Jon Whitney, who propositioned the band with remastering the tracks and releasing them as an album. After much deliberation, the band finally agreed and released their first self-titled album in limited release. The band gained national attention after a favorable review from music review site Pitchfork, causing the album to sell out quickly and prompting several repressings to be made.

A Place to Bury Strangers went on to release three more albums following their self-titled debut, Exploding Head in 2009, Worship in 2012, and just last Febrauary, Transfixiation. Transfixiation is the fourth full-length release from the band and features little deviation from their tried and true formula of playing really, really, really loud and blasting in noise from guitar feedback.

They will be playing at this year’s Austin Psych Fest in Austin, TX(go figure) alongside many other notable psychedelic rock acts such as Tame Impala, Fuzz, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Jesus and Mary Chain and many more! Austin Psych fest will be held May 8-10 at Carson Creek Ranch in Austin.
