Fitzgerald’s, the iconic Houston venue, reopened this Saturday with an iconic Houston performer; Bun B. I arrived at 8 p.m., much earlier than any normal concert goer, so my friend and I took to counting the amount of Houston gear people were sporting as a way to pass the time. At the beginning of the night, I bet we would see 20 articles and my friend bet 15. We doubled our guesses halfway through the night. Houston really showed out.

Initially, we had a little trouble getting clearance to shoot upstairs where the performances were happening, but this turned out to be a blessing in disguise. At some point while we were waiting for some word on the camera situation and counting Rockets hats, Bun’s PR guy talked to us, cleared us for shooting, and promised us a quick interview with Bun as soon as he got there. Needless to say we were psyched!

When we reached a count of 22 Houston articles, it was around 10 p.m. and the openers, Def Perception, were performing. They put on a great show, with lot of energy and really got the crowd going. The previously mellow and sparse upstairs quickly filled up with dancing bodies. About halfway through their set, we got the text we’d been waiting for; BUN WAS HERE! Time for our quickie interview!!

In order to deal with the time constraints and the fact that the Mayor was about to show up, we decided to ask Bun 5 favorites. We knew Bun was a huge foodie so naturally I asked about his favorite restaurant which I learned was MF Sushi. His favorite sneaker is the Nike Sb Concept Dunk, and his favorite city  (other than Houston of course) is Port Arthur, Tex., where he was born and raised. When asked about his favorite up and coming Houston rapper, Bun thinks “they’re all great” but didn’t specify any because “[he] doesn’t like one person over another person.” Obviously, like any serious journalist, I asked him what his favorite animal was; it’s a ferret.

We headed back out to the floor just in time for Mayor Annise Parker to arrive. By the way, we were up to 31 Houston reps now. The crowd was so loud I was genuinely fearing hearing loss. The much beloved Mayor gave Bun and extremely warm introduction, touting his many talents and  his services to Houston. Finally, Bun B came out and all my fears of hearing loss quickly materialized. I had known about his legendary status, but I never expected this. As Bun started to rap, the crowd sang along to every single word. It was really an amazing experience, and the only word to accurately describe it was trill. It was just really, really trill.
