California math-rock band, Chon, took over the Bronze Peacock Room at the House of Blues on Saturday night. Despite Justin Bieber playing across the street at Toyota Center, they managed to completely sell out the show. Chon didn’t come alone, of course. They brought a crazy lineup filled with other instrumental bands that brought their own flair and style to the stage.

Walking into the venue was a bit overwhelming. The last time I went to the Bronze Peacock Room was for a local show that filled the venue less than halfway. Seeing that room completely packed was insane. Everyone was piling on top of each other and fighting their way to the front to get in on all of the action.

The night kicked off with Strawberry Girls. I have heard their name thrown around several times, but never actually checked them out.  As soon as they started playing, I got into it. They brought a heavy and aggressive aspect that made their sound unique from the other bands. If you are a fan of the Mars Volta or At the Drive-In, you will definitely dig them.

Next up was Texas’ own Polyphia. Hailing from Dallas, these guys have taken the progressive metal and rock community by storm by creating their own metal and jazz infused sound. They recently released a new album titled Resistance. They kicked off their set with the lead single from the new album, “Euphoria.” They continued their set with a mix of new songs and their hit songs, such as “James Franco” and “Impassion.” Overall it was a great set filled with intense riffage and cheesy jokes provided by bassist Clay Gobber.

Chon capped off the night with their headlining set. They kicked the set off with one of their earlier singles “Across the Spectrum.” Soon after, a small mosh pit erupted and everyone started going wild. They continued through the night, performing a killer set list that included “Mountains of Creation,” “Knot” and my personal favorite, “Fall.” The band ended ended the show with their two hit singles “Bubble Dream” and “Perfect Pillow.”

Overall, it was a great show stacked with extremely talented musicians. Those who chose to go see Justin Bieber instead definitely missed out.
