The 2016 MTV Video Music Awards took place Sunday night in New York City. The jam-packed broadcast featured performances and appearances from Future, Simone Biles, Ariana Grande, Nick Jonas and Halsey. The awards for Best Pop Video, Best Female Video and Video of the Year went to Beyoncé for “Hold Up” and “Formation,” while Drake, Twenty One Pilots and DNCE won the moonmen for Best Hip-Hop Video, Best Rock Video and Best New Artist respectively. Take a look at some of the show’s highs and lows below.

Rihanna hits the stage again and again
This year’s Video Vanguard Award recipient took to the VMA stage four times. She punctuated the show, performing medleys of her hits “We Found Love,” “Rude Boy,” “Work,” “Pour It Up,” and “Diamonds.” Though the singer’s vocals were hit-or-miss throughout the night, she kept the audience entertained with her choreography and performance looks.

Kanye West premieres “Fade” music video
MTV gave Kanye four minutes to talk about whatever he wanted and the rapper delivered an off-the-cuff speech where he touched on his idols, violence in Chicago and the Taylor Swift-“Famous” controversy. At the end of it all, he played the visuals for “Fade,” featuring a nearly naked Teyana Taylor dancing around a room in a style reminiscent of Flashdance.

Beyoncé steals the show
Beyoncé recreated her visual album, Lemonade, in what was arguably the night’s best performance. The VMAs became the Formation World Tour as the singer performed “Sorry” and other singles.

Britney Spears returns to the VMAs
In her first VMA performance since 2007, Spears sang the chart-topping single “Make Me….” Collaborator G-Eazy joined her on stage for the latter half of the performance. The duo did a rendition of his hit “Me, Myself & I,” but unfortunately it fell apart as G-Eazy forgot the words to his own song.
