Day For Night Artist Spotlight: Mykki Blanco

The amazing wonder that is Mykki Blanco is shrouded into its own world.

 

Living in North Carolina, Mykki thrived in the art world of Raleigh before running away from home at age 16 to live in New York. Eventually he relocated to California before winning a scholarship to attend the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, but dropping out after two semesters in 2006.

 

 

He released a book of poetry called “From the Silence of Duchamp to the Noise of Boys” was published in 2011 and he released his first music EP Mykki Blanco and the Mutant Angels. Then in 2012, Blanco released the mixtape Cosmic Angel: The Illuminati Prince/ss and then his second EP Betty Rubble: The Initiation. Over the next two years he released Spring/Summer 2014 EP and then Gay Dog Food, which features spoken word by Kathleen Hanna.

 

 

Considered one of hip hop’s queer pioneers, Mykki revealed through his Facebook that he was HIV positive and has advocated for LGBTQ+ extensively throughout his career. Blanco’s debut album Mykki was released in September 2016, with the single “High School Never Ends (feat. Woodkid)”, which he will be showcasing at this month’s Day For Night Festival in Houston on December 17-18.
