Starting a career at 15 can’t be easy by any means (I’m 23 and I’m still struggling) and for someone who is now 25, a decade later, Sky Ferreira is still producing music but is now doing it her way.

Ferreira it seems has always been destined for music seeing as how her grandmother was Michael Jackson’s hairstylist and so she grew up not only with his presence but also his insistence for her to pursue music, which resulted in her receiving opera lessons. When she dropped out of high school, she started posting music on Myspace and then wrote a letter to Bloodshy & Avant asking for them to sign her, landing her on the path to start professionally recording.

After signing in 2007 there were many voices involved in creating the EP “As If!” (2011) and though she has no regrets, it wasn’t really the sound that she wanted to put out there. While a debut album was announced to be released in 2012, instead another EP “Ghost” was released and peaked at number 7 on the US Billboard Top Heatseekers with great emphasis on the single “Everything is Embarrassing”, which she wrote with Dev Hynes and Ariel Rechtshaid. The track got attention from Pitchfork and took off from there.

In 2013, Ferreira announced that her debut album “Night Time, My Time” would be released later that year and with its release, it garnered favorable reviews from critics like Metacritic, Rolling Stones, and Pitchfork. The album still had pop elements but was definitely more guitar heavy with amazing acoustics. She was influenced by the likes of Fiona Apple and with it, she is able to mix bubblegum pop and alternative 90s grunge in such a way that is so simply her. Following, Ferreira got involved with a few acting gigs and in 2014 joined Miley Cyrus on her Bangerz Tour after her tour with Vampire Weekend.

Her second album, titled “Masochism”, was announced in 2014 with the title confirmation in 2015. Up to now, she has been working on that as well as getting more involved with film and doing a few collaborations and performances here and there.

Through it all, Ferreira has a major dedication to music (in 2014 she fell during a performance, split her shin open but finished the set before being rushed to the hospital to receive 60 stitches) and it is seeming that her career is just gaining momentum. Come catch her perform at Day for Night music festival right here in Houston Dec. 15-17. Buy your tickets here.
