BUKU Artist Spotlight: SZA

Written by on February 2, 2018

SZA, also known as Solána Rowe, has been the fresh new face of today’s R&B scene. Born in St. Louis, Missouri and then later moving to New Jersey, she clearly had a natural talent and passion for music growing up. In 2012 and 2013 she released 2 EPs, and her talent got the attention of the major hip-hop label Top Dawg Entertainment, who signed her in 2013. A year later, she released another EP with them, called Z. SZA also worked with artists like Chance the Rapper and Rhianna, gaining more attention and popularity through these collaborations. Then, the life-changing album that is Control was released summer of 2017, and SZA has been blowing up and gaining a massive fan base of young music listeners since then. The album immediately got excellent reviews and landed a spot on the Billboard 200, with multiple platinum-certified singles, included the beloved hit “Love Galore” featuring Travis Scott.

Without a doubt she is now one of the most popular young artists, and she brings some important qualities we’ve been desperately needing in the popular music scene. She is down to earth, a natural beauty, and radiates love and support for other young women. In my mind, she’s the newer generations’ Rhianna, as she brings the same effortless beauty and unbelievable vocals, but being younger she emotionally and lyrically connects with our generation more. At only the age of 27, SZA has the entire world in love with her and at her fingertips. Her fall 2017 tour for Control was a massive success, with most dates entirely selling out, she took the country by storm and proved she was a talented live performer as well.

Bringing so much energy, love, girl power, and of course, incredible vocals – you won’t want to miss seeing SZA perform live. She will be hitting the stage at BUKU Music & Arts Festival this spring break in the vibrant city of New Orleans, among other talented artists on a phenomenal and diverse lineup. This is one festival you won’t want to miss! Click here to buy your tickets to BUKU.
