Artist Spotlight: Classic Man Jidenna

Written by on October 31, 2019

The Classic Man is back and ready to take over Houston in style. With the release of his 85 to Africa in late August, Jidenna Theodore Mobisson, commonly known as Jidenna, wasted no time in hitting the road.

After graduating from Stanford University, Jidenna began working on his music career. He finally made his debut with single, “The Classic Man”, a catchy song title that would also become his stage persona. Later that year, the song was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Performance

If a Grammy nomination wasn’t enough for the average Joe, he was further introduced to the masses through his special appearance in an episode of the Netflix superhero show, Luke Cage, where Jidenna performed his 2015 “Long Live The Chief. The song would be the lead single in his second album, The Chief, which he released less than two years later and served to solidify his status in the industry.

Although his identity as a polished man in suits helped to launch him into stardom, Jidenna decided to loosen up his tie and return to his roots for his next work. His sophomore album titled, 85 To Africa, explores the African diaspora, his parents’ love story, and his rise to acclaim.  Released on August 23rd, the project incorporates different sounds derived from music of various groups of people – like a traveler displaying his souvenirs.  Despite the changes in theme and outfits, Jidenna sticks to his simple rhymes and soothing vocals- a recipe that continues to prove successful for him.

Prior to the big release, Jidenna announced a tour to accompany his album which would kick off in October. The Classic Man is scheduled to hit the stage at the House of Blues on November 8th – giving fans ample time to get tickets for the show. If his performance is anything like the album, attendees can expect to be blown away in the smoothest way imaginable.
