Green Day Comes to Houston!

Written by on July 16, 2021

As states begin to reopen, bands have finally begun their tours, some having been postponed multiple times over the last year and a half. One of the first major acts to return to the Houston stage is pop-punk group Green Day, along with Fall Out Boy and Weezer.

Formed in the late 80’s in northern California, Green Day has been a pillar of pop-punk since their label debut Dookie in 1994. The band’s lineup consists of Billie Joe Armstrong on guitar and vocals, Mike Dirnt on bass, and Tre Cool on drums. In the mid-late 2000s, Green Day released two records, American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, both to massive acclaim.

In 2010, American Idiot was adapted into a musical and performed on Broadway, with Armstrong playing the character of “St Jimmy” during the run. The show went on to win two Tony awards.

Rolling Stone ranked American Idiot’s title track 47th on their list of 100 best songs of the 2000s. Some of the band’s most popular songs include “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Basket Case,” and (of course) “American Idiot” all of which have more than half a billion streams on Spotify.

In 2016, Green Day released Revolution Radio, their 12th studio album. Hailed as a return to form by many critics, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, marking the band’s third chart-topping release. The band’s newest release, Father of All Motherfuckers, debuted in February of 2020, followed by a series of singles and covers released throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Green Day has been nominate for 20 Grammy awards, winning five including Record of the Year for “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and Best Rock Album for both American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. Selling over 75 million records, the band has been cemented as one of the top-selling groups of all time.

Green Day’s Hella Mega Tour stops in Houston on Thursday, July 29th at Minute Maid Park. Get your tickets today and catch this great band!
