Mitski Makes her Way Down to White Oak Music Hall this February

Written by on January 25, 2022

Mitski Miyawaki, also known as MITSKI, is a Japanese-American Indie-rock artist who is known for her eclectic sound and volatile lyrics. When she started as a singer in 2012, she self-released her debut album LUSH, which showcased her poetic lyricism. She also went on to self-release her sophomore album Retired from Sad, New Career in Business, which was also her senior project during her time at State University of New York at Purchase. During this time, she released Mitski classics like “Strawberry Blond” and “I Want You.”

Eventually, Mitski signed with her first label, Double Double Whammy, and released her third studio album Bury Me at Makeout Creek in 2014, which definitively changed her sound from cheerful and positive, to sounds full of rage and emotion. With songs like “Francis Forever” and “First Love / Late Spring,” Mitski proved that she was here to stay and that she was not afraid of being unhinged.

Mitski then signed with label Dead Oceans and released her critically acclaimed fourth album Puberty 2,  an album with very heavy tones about the meaning of true adulthood and themes regarding alienation and her racial identity. Mitski shows that she is not afraid to experiment and dig deep within her true feelings, as shown in the album’s streaming hits like “Your Best American Girl” and “I Bet on Losing Dogs.”

In August 2018, Mitski released her fifth album Be the Cowboy, which became one of the best albums of the year. While the album steers away from the melancholic sound she’s established, it’s definitely more glamorous with shimmering disco tunes all around. The album features short but catchy tracks like the repetitious “Nobody,” the seductive synth-induced “Washing Machine Heart,” and the swinging “Me and My Husband.”

After performing her final show for her BTC era in New York along with Lucy Dacus, Mitksi deleted everything from her social media accounts and went into hiatus. She subsequently ended her hiatus and released the single “Working for the Knife” in October 2021, which caught fans by surprise. In November 2021, she released yet another single called “The Only Heartbreaker” along with the announcement of her sixth studio album Laurel Hell, which is due February 4th, 2022. Since then, she’s released two more tracks – “Heat Lightning” and “Love Me More.”

Mitski will be hitting the road again in February 2022 to promote her newest album as she announced a North American and European tour, and of course she will be making her way down to the Lawn at White Oak Music Hall with opener CHAI on February 24th. Mitski is known for being a daring and energetic performer, and for creating new renditions of her own songs. The show is currently sold out, join the waitlist here.
