Legendary Houston Band Khruangbin to Play a Homecoming Show at 713 Music Hall

Written by on April 11, 2022

After canceling their New Year’s Eve performance due to a COVID-19 surge, Houston trio Khruangbin will finally make their way down to 713 Music Hall to play an overdue hometown show.

The band formed in 2009 and consists of members Laura Lee, Mark Speer and Donald “DJ” Johnson. Khruangbin is known for their obscure Middle Eastern and Mediterranean soul – embracing multiple cultures through the power of music. After releasing their EPs The Infamous Bill (2014) and History of Flight (2015), they released their debut album in November 2015, called The Universe Smiles Upon You. This album contains funky beats that we know and love, from “White Gloves” to “People Everywhere (Still Alive).”

Following the success of their debut album, Khruangbin managed to create a whole new atmosphere in their psychedelic sophomore album Con Todo el Mundo, released in 2017. The album was written to be diverse and break barriers, with unique arrangements which are beautifully showcased in tracks like “Maria Tambien” and “Evan Finds the Third Room.” Their musical direction took a turn in their third album Mordechai, which was released in June 2020. This album is sonically different but just as great; it is their first album to feature vocals from the trio and contains a multitude of vibrant sounds.

Along with their own works, they’ve also collaborated with many artists, most notably, fellow Texan Leon Bridges. Before the release of Mordechai, Leon Bridges and Khruangbin released an incredible collaborative EP: Texas Sun. Bridges’ soulful vocals pairs perfectly with the trio’s powerful instrumentation – creating a delightful musical balance.

The two Texas-artists came together once again to release Texas Moon, the EP counterpart to Texas Sun, in February 2022. The EP serves as the opposite to its predecessor and recaptivates listeners with a more wistful tone. Songs such as “B-Side” and “Chocolate Hills” are buoyant surprises, but still tracks we love nonetheless.

Khruangbin will embark on their 2022 Space Walk Tour on April 29th in Cincinnati. Also scheduled to headline shows in major cities like Vancouver and Berkley, the Houston trio will perform at our very own 713 Music Hall on May 11th with South Carolina artist Toro y Moi serving as the opener. This show will definitely be an experience, thanks to its homecoming status, so get your tickets here before it sells out.
