Die Antwoord is South Africa’s answer to hip-hop.
In 2008, rappers Ninja and Yolandi Visser joined forces with producer DJ Hi-Tek to create the alternative group. The trio are some of the leading faces of Zef, a South African counter-culture movement that mimics the style of early ’90s east coast rap.
In 2009, Die Antwoord released their debut album, $O$, and attracted international attention with their track “Enter the Ninja.”
The group’s second and third albums, Ten$ion and Donker Mag, followed in 2012 and 2014 respectively. Those project spawned some of Die Antwoord’s biggest hits, including “I Fink You Freeky” and “Baby’s On Fire.”
The group is touring to promote their most recent releases, Suck on This and Mount Ninji and da Nice Time Kid. Catch them during weekend two of the Austin City Limits music festival.
Austin City Limits Weekend Two will run October 7-9 in Zilker Park. Purchase passes here.
