Flying Lotus

Written by on September 7, 2012

If there’s one artist that gets his fair share of airplay on Coog Radio, it’s Flying Lotus. FlyLo’s unique brand of Afrocentric electronic music covers a lot of ground including psychedelic, soul, funk, jazz, and british dub-step, making for an easy station favorite.  We’ve been eager to write about FL for some time, but with collaboration after collaboration after speculated collaboration, we’ve been overwhelmed by the L.A mega-producer’s prolific run in latter half of this year. We can now have a moment of “catch-up” with this short film directed by Khalil Joseph featuring new music from FlyLo’s upcoming Until The Quiet Comes.

Khalil Joseph’s short takes you to a neighborhood of Los Angeles, juxtaposing two gruesome shootings and a group of kids frolicking in a schoolyard with a suite of serene tracks while weaving in beautiful choreography and stunning cinematography, making for surreal visual poetry.

The first track featured is a prelude to the Erykah Badu feature “See Thru To U,” a darker shade of the full-formed track, carried by Badu’s haunting vocal line. With “Hunger” Flying Lotus takes the organic timbres he was revered for with Cosmogramma a step further with acoustic guitars, piano, strings, and what is assumed to be a signature Thundercat bass line, playing the role of composer more than producer. The last song we’re introduced to is “Getting There (feat Niki Randa)”. FL takes lush Rhodes-esque key flourishes that would make his auntie proud and has them floating on top of a “one-and-and” groove in true FlyLo fashion.

Inspired by Stereolab, Gentle Giant, Portishead, and featuring Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Thundercat, Erykah Badu, Niki Randa, and Laura Darlington, Until The Quiet Comes will definitely be an album to look out for. Pick it up October 2nd.
