ACL Artist Spotlight: Alex G
Written by Jennifer Truong on October 5, 2017
If you’re looking for an extremely diverse musician, look no further than Alex Giannascoli, an artist who simply cannot be defined into just one genre. More commonly known as (Sandy) Alex G, the multi-instrumentalist dubbed “Internet’s secret best songwriter” by Fader began his musical career writing and recording music from his own home in Pennsylvania during his college days. Think Elliot Smith with a distorted surprise, Alex G draws influence from 90s bands and combines electronic elements with acoustic sounds and untraditional indie-rock melodies to create his own original content. In his most recent release Rocket, he experiments with jazz, country, and pop-rock in a 14-track album with honest, relatable lyrics that explore the ideas of toxic relationships and depression.
Frank Ocean himself has noticed Alex G’s talent and recruited him for his two most recent albums, Endless and Blonde. You can hear his guitar work in two of my favorite songs on Blonde, “White Ferrari” and “Self Control”. The artist has kept himself busy touring this past year and you can experience his talent for yourself at Austin City Limits on October 6th and October 13th by getting tickets here. Be sure to check out his other works on his official website and Bandcamp.
