FKA twigs is officially back with the powerful first look into her new era—EUSEXUA. twigs has been teasing this era for almost a year, with the first look being a performance at the Valentino L’École Spring/Summer 2024 show during Paris Fashion Week. Finally, on September 13th, 2024, “EUSEXUA” was uploaded to YouTube, featuring two songs from the upcoming album of the same title. That same day, the album release date, January 24th, 2025, and the album cover was also announced to socials.

Like most, you may be wondering what “eusexua” means. On “The Run Through” podcast with Vogue, twigs describes it as the “feeling when you’ve been dancing all night and you lose seven hours to the music…It’s, like, this kind of meditative, like, amazing, beautiful physical experience”. Eusexua is being lost in the moment, unable to be anywhere but where you are. This becomes clear in the direction of the video.

The journey to Eusexua begins with “Drums of Death”, which is set in a drab and colorless office space. It is an electrifying electronic track produced by Koreless. The song’s intro has rapid beats interspersed with audio splicing of a sample from “One of a Kind” by G-Dragon. The track is very reminiscent of twigs’ earlier work on her EP M3LL155X but with her current evolutions as an artist.

The intro has a hypnotizing rhythm, but once twigs begins singing, it takes on a different shape completely. This transition is where everything becomes more raw and vulnerable, heading towards a place of eusexua. While before both twigs and the dancers had been wearing suits, now their heads are shaved and everyone is left in their undergarments.

“Eusexua,” the second track, is also produced by Koreless. It has a pacifying and gentle nature to its sound that glides into your system with its enveloping beats and the comfort it offers. While the visuals of “Drums of Death” begin in an office space, “Eusexua” take place in a different plane. The video shifts from the enclosed nature of everyday life to stripping into something more vulnerable, placing an emphasis on the bareness of our bodies and their movement. Both the visuals and choreography are grounded in our identity as humans all while reaching towards something transcendental and otherworldly.

The video ends back in the office workroom. As twigs gets up to leave, the dancers emerge and follow her out. This clash between the brutality of corporate spaces and the raw honesty that existed in the plane of eusexua is a view to behold. None of which would be present if not for the phone call twigs answered in the first sequence.

This scene presents to us a meta-reality where the eusexua is something calling for us outside the confines we regulate ourselves to. There is something else out there for us that is not contained solely in the mundanity we allow ourselves to have.

If there is one thing twigs is known for, it is her dedication to her craft and the care she has for it in every aspect. The video includes stunning visuals and choreography where twigs once again is pushing boundaries and showcasing how visual art can enhance music. twigs beautifully captures the emotions transcribed in dance. A phenomena that cannot be said; only represented through movement.

twigs describes EUSEXUA as her “opus,” and just this video alone has allowed us to step into such a beautiful, transcendent experience. EUSEXUA will certainly be a journey, and we will take part of in January.
