Sum 41 Rocks Houston in Heaven and Hell Tour

Written by on October 7, 2024

Sum 41 along with Many Eyes and The Interrupters rocked 713 Music Hall Sunday Night, September 29, in what it is Sum 41’s final tour. The night was filled with good music, new and old songs, and many circle pits.

Many Eyes

Many Eyes is a new metal band formed in 2022. Their first album The Light Age came out earlier this month on September 6, 2024. They started out the night on a high note with the song “The Rainbow.” The song talks mainly about being born again and new beginnings. This makes it the best first song to start with.

Throughout the set the lead singer, Keith Buckley, stopped to thank everyone for being there and expressing gratitude that so many people were getting to hear their music for the first time. He also dedicated the song “Future Proof” to all the parents in the audience. The song talks about being future proof and being alive. With lyrics like “What kind of love is this if not divine” it’s clear to see why to see it would be dedicated to families.

The Interrupters

Founded in 2011, with their first album being released in 2014, The Interrupters are no stranger to the stage, and their energy is incredible! Their first song “Gave you everything” was performed beautifully.

Aimee Interrupter’s stage presence is truly something special and it showed all throughout the songs “Anything was Better,” “In the Mirror,” “Kiss the ground,” to their last song of the night “She’s Kerosene.” She is upbeat and dancing around the stage the entire time she’s up there, making sure to interact with all her band members, and the people in the audience. The next time they are in Houston, you’re not going to want to miss them!

Sum 41

The crowd only grew as we got closer and closer to Sum 41 taking the stage. The energy was buzzing as people of all ages waited patiently for the curtain to drop and the band to come out. And they certainly came out with a bang! From the first song “Motivation” there was high energy and a spectacle consisting of fire, smoke, and confetti. “Motivation” was first released in 2002 so it was clear Sum 41 would spend on time on their throwbacks instead of solely focusing on their new album Heaven x Hell.

The band started moving through the years with “The Hell Song” and “Underclass Hero” until landing on the song “Landmines,” throwing in stories from over the years and the meaning behind different songs. All the while, bringing an energy to the stage that is only matched by seasoned performers such as Sum 41.

Throughout the night, lead singer Deryck Whibley shared plenty of anecdotes from over the years. He also talked about his memoir Walking Disaster: My Life Through Heaven and Hell which is being released on October 8, 2024. Whibley eventually shared that the album Heaven x Hell would be the last one the band will release saying “We decided we needed to give you two albums in one as they’ll be the last ones by us.” Naturally, this resulted in many boos from the crowd. After 30 years of recording and touring, the band has decided it’s time.

From here we launched into stories about the different guitars owned by Whibley, and later a story that is sure to stick with everyone who listens to Sum 41. One night in 2008, Whibley was coming home and on their road there had been a fatal car accident to which he was one of the first people on the scene. When it was all done, he couldn’t shake the feelings from this night. This led him to write the song “Crash” which was the only piano ballad of the night, making it even more powerful.

Sum 41, in true Sum 41 fashion, abruptly ended the concert with a “Bye!” before running off stage. Of course, it was only for a few minutes before running back out and performing an encore of 3 songs, ending with their most popular song “In Too Deep,” which had the crowd at their loudest of the night.

The Sunday night full of Sum 41 nostalgia and music is surely one to always remember.
