Philip Glass – Dec. 2nd – The Menil Collection

American composer Philip Glass will be performing a new composition commissioned by The Menil Collection as part of the celebration of its 25th anniversary. The piece is the 17th of a 20 part series of solo piano compositions entitled Etudes Vol. 2, a continuation of Etudes which Glass began composing in the 1990s.
Philip Glass’ work has seen much acclaim and success, including his numerous operas, symphonies, concertos, and nominated film scores (awarded a Golden Globe award for Best Original Score for The Truman Show). But it’s his early work in serialism and “minimalism” with the Philip Glass Ensemble, putting him in a camp of celebrated composers such as John Cage, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley, that has had a tremendous influence on avant garde music. Philip Glass’s influence in current alternative music also lies with protege/collaborator Nico Muhly who has worked with the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Grizzly Bear, Jonsi, and The National.
Philip Glass performs Sunday, December 2nd on the Menil Campus at 12:00pm. Though the concert is free, seats are limited and require a ticket for entry. Tickets for the performance are already available for Menil Collection members and tickets will become open to the general public Thursday, October 18th at 9:00 AM at menil.org (limit of 2 tickets per order).
