The Tortured Poet’s Department Lives Up to the Hype

Taylor Swift has done it again! The Tortured Poet’s Department was released on April 19, 2024 and has climbed the charts to bring the artist 2.6 million album sales and her fourteenth number one album. The album starts off strong with Swift’s song “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone. The song is about a relationship that did not last long but had a lasting impact on the songwriter. With lyrics like “Your wife waters flowers, I wanna kill her” and “I love you, it’s ruining my life” the song is dramatic (in the best way) while still being relatable to the listener, reminding many of the one that got away from them.
“My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys” is another song that is incredibly relatable to anyone who has been mistreated by someone they loved. The song is all about a boy breaking his favorite things because of how much he loves them and how the love interest had to be one of his favorite things because of how broken he left her. This song secures the album’s spot as the ultimate breakup album from early on, but there are even more songs that support this.
The song “I Can Fix Him (No Really, I Can)” is all about being convinced that you can fix a man, and how maybe that’s true for a while. It never lasts, though, and it’s something a lot of women learned the hard way, making this song one of the most relatable off the album.
“imgonnagetyouback” is one of the peppier songs off this album and highlights how someone might have mixed feelings about a person – not knowing if they want revenge or want them back in their life. It feels like your inside the songwriter’s head while trying to make this decision.
These are just a few songs off the new album, and there’s even more to listen to as Taylor Swift surprised her fans with a second part to The Tortured Poet’s Department, she called The Tortured Poet’s Department: The Anthology. The Tortured Poet’s Department feels like it’s giving you a warm hug while simultaneously tearing your heart from your chest, and people can’t get enough. It’s an album you won’t want to skip out on. You can listen to all thirty-two songs on Spotify and Apple Music.
