Concert Review: PWR BTTM at Walter’s Downtown
Written by Junior Fernandez on June 28, 2016
PWR BTTM, a Brooklyn based queercore/garage punk duo, graced Houstonites with the unapologetically queer sound of their debut album Ugly Cherries. The record, released nearly a year ago, attempts to capture the fears of being queer, young, and liking boys while promoting self-love and empowerment.
Following a quick sound check, during which drummer Liv Bruce sang a stripped down cover of The Little Mermaid’s “Part of Your World,” guitarist Ben Hopkins, featuring glitter highlight and a thrifted dress, took a moment to remind the audience that the venue was to be a safe space. The duo made headlines earlier this year after announcing they would ask venues to provide easily accessible gender neutral restrooms on the night of their show to ensure the safety and comfort of viewers of all gender identities. While this might seem like a small step forward, such inclusive/safe spaces are often rare or in danger. (See – Massacre at Orlando Gay Nightclub, Houston Equal Rights Ordinance repealed following transphobic campaign, North Carolina, ect.)
