SXSW: Waxahatchee at The Velveeta Room

Ending Thursday’s night of SXSW, Katie Crutchfield of Waxahatchee played The Velveeta Room with tear filled eyes.Standing shoulder to shoulder in the Velveeta Room, fans gathered around the small stage and prepared for a much intimate show. A flustered Katie Crutchfield arrived to the venue twenty minutes prior to her set, and kept fluttering from stage to backstage. The crowd knew something was off.
The lights dimmed and the show was starting right on time, but before any music business started, Katie announced that someone had just stolen her guitar. It was hard for her to even finish the sentence since she was filled with such sadness. Thankfully, a music friend let her borrow her guitar and bartenders gave Crutchfield two tequila shots to ease her troubled mind.
With the mishap set aside, it was refreshing to see Crutchfield perform just her and the guitar. She performed beautiful originals from her latest album Ivy Tripp as well as a Lucinda Williams’ cover. You could hear a pen drop with every performance because her voice was utterly hypnotizing. Between songs she said, “You guys are so quite [laughs], it’s good, though. It is refreshing and therapeutic.” Katie tweeted about her stolen guitar here, so spread the word so this amazing musician can be reunited with her guitar!
