My Headphones Exploded After Listening to These Songs

Written by on November 20, 2023

There’s a running joke in my friend group that I listen to the same two artists every day: Radiohead and Taylor Swift. Despite this accurate assessment (insert an eye roll here), I think I have a fairly decent taste in music. Here are six songs I haven’t been able to stop listening to since fall began.

  1. Spectre by Radiohead
Radiohead is my favorite artist of all time, and I think it’s fair to say that “Spectre” is one of my favorite songs by the band. This song encapsulates how easily our life seems to get away from us when we are dominated by fear, and anger. Pretty comical when you think about how this song came to be. It was originally written for a James Bond movie, but it unfortunately got rejected for being too gloomy. Understandably so.
  1. Near by Deafheaven
Continuing the theme of getting away, this song talks about how it feels when someone we love gets away. While things just aren’t the same with the person that we once loved so much, it doesn’t keep us from longing for them. The lyrics also remain hopeful. If we ever did see that person who “got away” again, we would still find comfort in them.
  1. Hiding by Trembler
I have found myself listening to Trembler a lot more since they played alongside Juicebox and Narrow Head back in October. I am so glad I was able to see them all live. Literally everything about that lineup was perfect, so it seemed fitting I linked these next songs on this playlist.
  1. Flesh and Solitude by Narrow Head
Like I mentioned previously, I got to see Narrow Head this past month, making this my third time seeing them in concert! This song is off their most recent album Moment of Clarity, and I cannot emphasize enough just how good this album is. Granted I might be a bit biased because they are one of my favorite artists of all time.
  1. SCAR by Juicebox
This next artist, like Trembler, is a local Houston band. If anyone wants to get into the hardcore scene but doesn’t know where to start, I genuinely suggest going to a Juicebox show. Their music is so energetic and lively, it’s impossible to not dance to it. Even throughout this song, the energy the band is playing with literally exploded through my headphones!
  1. Relay by trauma ray
I love this song. It describes the emotions we go through when we want our crush, our situationship, basically that “unattainable” person to want us the way we want them. The song explains how no matter how much we chase them it is pointless, because they just get farther and farther away. So by the end of the song, we are “out of breath” and have accepted that they aren’t ours.
