Written by , on March 30, 2024

After a decade away from the stage, the legendary Don Omar, also known as the King of Kings, graced the stage of the Smart Financial Centre on March 24, 2024. He delivered a two-hour performance as part of his Back to Reggaetón tour, in which he paid tribute to his twenty-five-year career.

Don Omar kicked off the night with an explosive rendition of his iconic song “Dale Don Dale.” From that point on, it was a non-stop journey through his twenty-five-year career. With each song, Don Omar paid homage to his musical journey from his debut album The Last Don to his latest release Forever King. But it wasn’t just about his music, it was about the stories behind the songs.

The King of Kings delivered heartfelt speeches between sets giving fans a glimpse into the camaraderie and collaboration that defines the reggaeton genre. He reminisced about his musical beginnings expressing gratitude towards Héctor & Tito, who gave him the opportunity to become a composer and artist.

“Hace casi 25 años atrás mi vida cambió porque [Héctor y Tito] me dieron la oportunidad de convertirme en compositor de su disco, en ser artista de su sello, de ser su corista…hasta el sol de hoy donde quiera que me paro le doy gracias a Dios por Héctor y Tito.”

After each song, he would bow and ask the crowd his signature “¿Seguimos?” to which the crowd would cheer, and the music would resume. Between sets, he continued recounting the story behind collaborations with artists like Wisin & YandelLuny Tunes and Daddy Yankee. However, he also took a moment to thank his fans for their support.

“Gracias por estar haciendo historia conmigo en la noche de hoy…fuerte aplauso para ustedes; ustedes son las verdaderas estrellas de la noche de hoy.”

The concert was a visual feast, with lights and visuals that perfectly complemented each song’s vibe. Every moment of the concert felt like a glimpse into Don Omar’s soul but what set the concert apart was the sense of unity and joy that filled the air. Regardless of country of origin, the crowd came together as one united by their love of Don Omar’s music. As he sang hits like “Ella Y Yo” and “Mayor Que Yo” the crowd sang along, their voices blending into one.

After an electrifying performance of “Danza Kuduro,” the crowd was left begging for more. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, Don Omar returned to the stage for an encore and delivered unforgettable performances of “Conteo” and “Bandoleros.” The King of Kings, bid farewell to the audience thanking them for the sold-out show.

“Esta noche la llenaron ustedes… Se les quiere Houston.”

It was a night that will forever be remembered as a testament to the power of reggaeton to unite, uplift and empower. Don Omar’s music has transcended borders and generations; it was an honor for me and all those present to be a part of his musical journey.
