ACL Artist Spotlight: BadBadNotGood
Written by German Romaldo on October 5, 2017
The Canadian jazz outfit BADBADNOTGOOD compromises of four college graduates who bonded over hip-hop and rap while studying and performing in the jazz program at Humber College. They released music in 2011 through Bandcamp with covers to their favorite hip-hop tracks, but it was their work on Youtube with Tyler, the Creator that put the spotlight on the jazz band. They have seen a meteoric rise since 2014 when they released III, their LP, which demonstrated their raw skill in jazz improvisation and various genre-bending tunes. Their LP put them on the map for many great contemporary, mainly hip-hop, artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Danny Brown, and Ghostface Killah. The collaborations lined up for the music group, and there is no questioning why because they bring a new level of creativity through their knowledge and chemistry in music. As music students, let alone jazz students, BadBadNotGood’s understanding of the intricacies of rhythm, groove, and improvisation is an extremely useful asset any artist could find beneficial. The list of collaborations grew, and in 2016, they released their latest album, IV, with great amounts of praise from media outlets all around the world with BBC Radio 6 Music naming it their album of the year.
BadBadNotGood will definitely not disappoint with their appearance at ACL 2017, and they will likely make a great impression on any lover of music. They will be playing both weekends so do not forget to check them out. Dates are below along with their links to music and social media!
