ACL Day 2: Kali Uchis
Written by Cynthia Isabel Zelaya Ordonez on October 8, 2019
“¿Donde estan los Lationos?” Beaming with pride at Kali Uchis’ ACL set, that’s where!
At 5 ‘o clock sharp, the Colombian-American sensation took to the Miller Lite stage in a silver outfit reminiscent of a sexy knight costume. The setting sun made her almost blinding, but the crowd refused to look away as she began her performance with “Loner.”
Uchis has been called ‘genre-defying’ by many critics, and with good reason. She takes influence from a diverse set of musical loves. The fact that she can also draw inspiration from the music of another language let’s her tap into a world most others cannot. She showcased some of her tastes by covering Radiohead’s “Creep,” Pharell Williams’ “Beautiful,” and Don Omar’s iconic hit, “Pobre Diabla.”
Her performance was ridden with stunning visuals to accompany her flashy outfit. The perfect marriage between imagery and music shouldn’t come as a surprise to most fans, seeing as Kali intended to pursue film before ever considering music.
The crowd lost their minds when Uchis began to perform “Never Be Yours.” She came in to the scene with a bang in 2015 with her first EP, Por Vida. It featured the likes of Tyler the Creator. Diplo, and a few other notable names. So the rising star was bound to get press from the get go.
That isn’t to negate any of her own talent, however. Any doubts to that matter were dispelled by a stunning rendition of “After The Storm” for her finale.
Kali Uchis is currently on tour with Jorja Smith. If you missed her stop in your city, I suggest you ruch to buy tickets to see her at ACL Weekend 2!
