Woo in Two

It’s really difficult to describe how remarkable, weird, and eccentric the early era of indie electronic music was and very few groups were able to explore the musical imagination in that facility than Woo. Woo was a British duo formed by brothers Mark and Clive Ives in 1975 with the name of the band inspired by the sound produced by a musical saw. Between the late 70’s and mid 80’s, they recorded and produced a staggering 1500 tracks; a testament to their creativity. While the duo still perform today, the album that I am most passionate about is It’s Cozy Inside. 

Each track on this album tells a different story. Maybe one of love, sadness, comedy, destitute, success, almost mirroring stories a person would have with close friends or family. What is each piece saying? What is it trying to communicate with the listener? This album’s ability to balance the whimsical and serious so confidently seems to make the sound a lot more human than that of an extraterrestrial being. 

Its Cozy Inside is an album for all sorts of people. It doesn’t try to be something it isn’t. It doesn’t try too hard to be weird or funny. It doesn’t pander. It just is. Its eccentric nature is more inviting than many other works of the same ilk and is guaranteed to present something that everyone can appreciate to a degree. Its Cozy Inside is an underrated masterpiece and is not just music, but an experience.
