Vampire Weekend Stops in Houston on the ‘Only God Was Above Us’ Tour

On Thursday, June 6th, 2024, Vampire Weekend electrified 713 Music Hall while on tour for their latest album, Only God Was Above Us. Nearly selling out the venue, they were joined by the vibrant sounds of LA LOM.

Downtown Houston was alive with energy as fans of all ages flocked to the venue. Within moments of the doors opening, 713 Music Hall was quickly filling up with eager concertgoers. From the moment you stepped in, you could feel the anticipation and excitement in the air, as everyone geared up to see their beloved band take the stage.

Kicking off the night around 7 pm was The Los Angeles League of Musicians, more commonly known as LA LOM. The three-piece band from Cali blew the crowd away with their Latin instrumentals. For their forty-five minute set, the venue became a dance club that featured amazing originals, as well as a few covers. After the set concluded, the crowd was warmed up and ready for the final act.

Shortly following LA LOM was Vampire Weekend to close out the night. Immediately after the band stepped onto the stage, the crowd went crazy. It was the first time Vampire Weekend had performed in Houston in five years (which coincidentally was after the release of their fifth album) and the city was extremely happy to welcome them back.

At first glance, the stage appeared to have a modest and straightforward setup, featuring only a backdrop curtain and the band with their instruments. The performance commenced with “Mansard Roof” followed by “Holiday.” However, after the initial songs, the curtain dramatically dropped, unveiling an expansive set with an even larger band. The evening had already started on a high note, and it was clear this was just the beginning.

Composed of three main members, Vampire Weekend consists of: Chris Balo on bass, Chris Tomson on drums and Ezra Koenig on lead vocals and guitar. Since their formation in 2006, the band has seen tremendous success starting from their very first album, Vampire Weekend. The band has created a very distinct sound for themselves, which can be heard to this day with their newest album, Only God Was Above Us.

With each and every song performed by the group, the jam-packed house was right there to sing with them. While hard to choose from the amazing setlist, standout songs included, “Sunflower,” “This Life,” “Oxford Comma” and “Classical.” Performing songs from all five of their albums, Vampire Weekend appealed to all types of fans as they revisited music from all over their discography.

Overall, it was an absolutely fantastic night that I honestly cannot stop thinking about. Vampire Weekend gave a great performance that everyone should try and see at least once in their life. While their Texas-run is done for now and they will not be back in Houston on this specific tour, they will be closing out their U.S. tour by going back to Austin, TX!
