Concert Review: Pell at Warehouse Live
Written by Bethel Biru on February 28, 2016
The first time I saw Pell, he was opening for R&B princess Kehlani in July. Now he’s headlining his very own tour called Only In Your Dreams.
Houston’s iconic Warehouse Live was the venue of choice for the evening. After vibing in the dim lit room while the DJ played music to pass time, the first opening act Coast Vega came on. Even though it was my first time listening to his music, I was surprised at how quickly I liked it. The beats slightly reminded me of GoldLink and his energy was contagious.
Rappers John Ibe, Yonas aka LostLyrics and Trae Mitch followed shortly after. The energy in the room changed at the sight of Houston’s very own, and the crowd started going wild as they apologized for A$AP Ant not being able to make it before performing their famous “Hallows in A Clip“.
Up next was JID who just recently joined the tour from Atlanta. After doing a couple of mic checks and conversing with the crowd about his music, he instantly went into rapping. Judging from the look on everyones faces, you could tell no one expected such a soft spoken kid to pop off with that kind of energy, which couldn’t help but kind of remind me of Kendrick Lamar.
The last act before Pell was Daye Jack, a friendly kid also from Atlanta whose music doesn’t quite fall under any category. He raps and sings, then does a bit of both at the same time. I actually heard his song “Hello World” a while ago and loved how easy it was to vibe to. After performing some songs from his album Soul Glitch, He closed with “Hands Up,” a powerful song which speaks about one of the most important movements going on in America today – Black Lives Matter.
Pretty soon smoke started hazing up the room and the lights were turned off–red and white illuminated the stage. Pell came on as the crowd started chanting “Pell Yeah!”
He played “Almighty Dollar,” which was one of my favorite songs, before going into “Got It Like That.” He hyped up the crowd and jumped in, creating a mini mosh pit as the crowd sang the chorus back while jumping up and down along with the beat.
After a couple of his songs, the mics started acting up which resulted in a short freestyle of Pell saying “F* that sh*t” before continuing with another one of my favorites, “Runaway.” All in all, it was a great night and the concert didn’t fall short of any expectations. If you’re a fan of Childish Gambino, Raleigh Ritchie or even a little Tyler the Creator, then Pell is your guy.
