ACL Artist Spotlight: Car Seat Headrest
Written by German Romaldo on October 9, 2017
Formed in 2010 by Will Toledo, Car Seat Headrest started off as a small indie venture by the Virginian native. Cranking out album after album, Toledo soon grew to internet fame through Bandcamp and even had a run-in with the music boards of 4chan. Toledo captured the lo-fi sound while writing melancholic, introspective lyrics, and he ran with it for 11 straight albums before being signed with Matador Records. With independent label giant Matador, Toledo made his debut with the successful Teens of Style. The album was mainly re-recordings of his greatest hits during his internet era.
Fast forward to May 2015, Car Seat Headrest is now a full-fledged band with four members rather than a single Toledo, and they are on the verge of releasing their latest album Teens of Denial. The album was critically-acclaimed within indie rock circles and a step forward for the band. Car Seat Headrest’s lyrics were dark and moody while the instrumentation was heavily reminiscent of the indie rock bands from the mid-90’s and new wave of the 80’s. Car Seat Headrest continues to mature and flesh out their sound with every album they continue to make.
Car Seat Headrest will be playing ACL 2017 on both weekends, Saturdays the 7th and 14th on the Honda Stage at 2:00 pm, so be sure to not miss out on them! Links to tickets, band website, Spotify, and social media are below!
