SXSW Artist Spotlight: Post Animal
Written by German Romaldo on March 5, 2018
Have you ever wondered what Tame Impala would sound like if Kevin Parker continued in the musical direction of Innerspeaker? I like to think that the Chicago-based Post Animal is the answer to that question. The five piece hasn’t been around for that long, yet they sound so experienced and tight that it’s hard to believe that they hadn’t performed a live show a little over a year ago. Since then, they have seen the continental United States and Canada, alongside some Chicago staples such as Twin Peaks and White Reaper; it has not gone unnoticed. Earlier this year, the rock band signed with Polyvinyl Records, and they announced the release of their first full-length record, When I Think of You in a Castle, which will be out April 20th. Now if you are a fan of Stranger Things, especially “Stephen,” or Joe Keery’s character, Post Animal might sound familiar as he is an occasional member of the band. Of course, his appearances are rare, but he does take up the role of lead vocalist in their newly released track, “Ralphie,” off their upcoming album.
I have had the chance to see Post Animal not once, but twice, in Houston. I have to say, that they know how to make a crowd move with, simply, their groove and fantastic riffs. The first show I attended astonished me. With a relatively early set, and people still filling the room at The Secret Group, Post Animal had the crowd dancing as if they were the finale rather than the headliner. Post Animal’s run has been a terrific one so far, and they are not slowing down. This year will be their first SXSW, so they will make it a special one for you.
