Music Review: “Lost in the Fire” by Gesaffelstein & the Weeknd
Written by Quenton Redding on January 14, 2019
Gesaffelstein fed the XO Crew with “Lost in the Fire” featuring the Weeknd, and boy they did not disappoint. Gesaffelstein and Abel seem to have flawless chemistry as they’re three for three with their singles including “I Was Never There” and “Hurt You” off of My Dear Melancholy. Gesaffelstein sound fits the style of writing as his production is usually gloomy with just the right amount of pop. Gesaffelstein is a French producer who’s gearing up to release Hyperion which is a follow up to his 2013 album Aleph. These two would’ve been perfect for the Bladerunner 2049 soundtrack, as it’s a perfect mix of a dark and futuristic sound. The Weeknd come through with his sexual lyrics and unforgettable voice proving to the small crowd yelling “I miss the old Abel,” that he never left. Hopefully, this is a glimpse of what we’re getting from him as he has been hinting at a new album this year.
There’s been a lot of talk around the lyrics in this song saying that Abel may be dissing Drake. For those who don’t know these two have had such a confusing roller coaster relationship. Drake helped give The Weeknd the platform to become the star he is today. Back in 2012, these two worked together on Drake’s Take Care and formed OVOXO. After The Weeknd decided not to sign to Drake’s OVO, it seemed that their relationship went sour. Skipping to 2017 rumors started to pour out that Drake was dating The Weeknd’s ex Bella Hadid (Bella Hadid has since denied the rumor), which ironically is who Abel is singing about in the song. Of course, Abel didn’t like this and ever since then, it seems they have been throwing shots at each other in different songs since. The lyric that people are talking about is the line according to Rap genius:
“And I just want a baby with the right one, cause I could never be the one to hide one”.

This could possibly be a shot about Drake “hiding” his kid which first came from Pusha T’s “The Story of Adidon” which was a diss track towards Drake saying:
“You are hiding a child, let that boy come home
Deadbeat mothaf***a playin’ border patrol, ooh”
everybody talking about The Weeknd subbing Drake on Lost in the Fire but i'm more interested in him saying Bella Hadid told him she's into women pic.twitter.com/8ddiCLo75I

There are other lyrics that have gotten people attention like The Weeknd saying Bella maybe into women and some other sexually explicit things. One thing or another as a fan I wish all artist could just get along and continue making beautiful soundtracks to our miserable lives. With all that said and done, what do you guys think is OVOXO officially dead or just a bump in their roller coaster relationship?
