Kali Uchis & Jorja Smith Tour Houston
Written by Leslie Campos on May 8, 2019
If you don’t know Jorja Smith or Kali Uchis, then please invite me to the rock you’ve been living under. I’m kidding! Well, only partly.
Picture this: You, me, Kali Uchis, and Jorja Smith. This Friday at the Revention Music Center.
In case you need a little more convincing, then let me introduce you to some of the hottest songstresses on the scene.
Kali Uchis
Kali is a 24-year-old Columbian-American singer-songwriter. She is known for her irresistible almost whiny voice that lingers between R&B, Soul, and Jazz. Her sound infuses many different genres that all work together to take you to a place of raw emotion, be it good or bad. Uchis excels at storytelling. With her lyrics and the perfect way the notes fall on her track, she is able to transport you into the picture she’s painting. To catch a glimpse of what I mean, check out the stunning acoustic performance of her track, “Dead to Me”.
This tour follows the release of her highly anticipated 2018 album Isolation. The album features so many great hits like “After the Storm (Featuring Tyler, the Creator & Bootsy Collins)” as well as her reggaeton Spanish bop “Nuestra Planeta (Featuring Reykon)”. It’s refreshing to see an artist like Kali, who has such a strong sense of self and is so powerful musically. Just to let you in on how unique she is, enjoy this performance of her cover to Björk‘s “Venus as a Boy”.
Jorja Smith
Jorja Smith is a 21-year-old Jamaican-English singer-songwriter. Her voice and sound are laid back and so relatable. She sings about the complications and shortcomings of love. The mixture of her neo-R&B vocals with genuine lyrics almost mimics one’s life’s events—or at least makes you feel like it does. This tour follows the release of her highly raved about 2018 debut album, Lost & Found. If you’re interested in the album and her sound, then you absolutely cannot miss her amazing performance at the legendary NPR Tiny Desk.
And of course, this tour might not even be here if it wasn’t for the track of Uchis’s album, “Tyrant (Featuring Jorja Smith)”. We didn’t know that it would be the start of a very beautiful and musically talented friendship.
