Selena’s Iconic Houston Rodeo Performance, 28 Years Later

Written by on February 21, 2023

“How you doing! Houston, Texas!,” Selena Quintanilla began her final Houston Rodeo Astrodome performance with these words. Her red lips would halo the performance microphone for the last time on February 26th, 1995. Twenty-eight years have passed and Selena’s purple glitter flared bodysuit still sparkles brightly in the minds and hearts of many fans today. Her powerful vocals and raspy tone translate the feeling of love, confidence, and unity to the Hispanic community – even more so to the Hispanic community of the lone star state.

In Selena’s iconic rodeo performance, she began the experience with her own medley of popular disco songs. She graced the stage throughout the “Disco Medley,” with her dance moves as it led to her next song. “Amor Prohibido,” “Baila Esta Cumbia,” “Tus Desprecios,” “Cobarde,” “Techno Cumbia,” and “La Carcacha” are some of the fan favorites that were performed that night. As the crowds’ energy grew, so did Selena and her bands. The divine power she had in the Tejano music scene showed as she moved her body to the beat of each song. Later throughout her hour-long show, she would sing songs such as “No Me Queda Mas,” “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” “Si Una Vez,” and “El Chico Del Apartamento 52.” The Houston Rodeo has truly become a token in the legacy of Selena.

The season for cowboy boots, sticky cotton candy fingers, overpriced hot dogs, carnival rides, and concerts full of stars is making its way back to Houston. With the excitement of spending time with cherished ones at this year’s rodeo, the recognition of Selena Quintanilla’s impact must be made. Selena ended her performance with her world-renowned hit, “Coma La Flor.” She bloomed in her humble efforts to connect the crowds she sang for, working to make a massive impact in the music world. Houston holds the special pleasure of being the place where Selena got to grow in. After hitting all the notes in Coma La Flor, Selena yelled out “Muchas Gracias, Houston Texas!” Through this upcoming Rodeo season, Selena will never be forgotten.
