Fun Fun Fun Fest Artist Spotlight: BadBadNotGood
Written by Waylon ODay on October 14, 2015
The jazz trio from Canada is coming to Texas! BadBadNotGood will be performing at FunFunFunFest in Austin, Nov. 6-8 at Auditorium Shores. The three met at Humber College in a jazz program, duh, and bonded over a love of underground hip hop, namely Odd Future and MF Doom. Their first two releases consisted of predominately hip hop covers of artists like Wu Tang Clan, Gucci Mane and some outsiders such as James Blake’s “CMYK.” BBNG’s ability to transform hip hop beats into smooth yet spastic, swaggering tunes is their calling card and what led to de facto Odd Future leader, Tyler, the Creator to discovering the trio. BBNG had already covered some Odd Future songs in the past, so it only made sense for Tyler to ask them to record a couple backing tracks on his sophomore release, Goblin. BBNG have also produced tracks for Earl Sweatshirt, played for Frank Ocean and remixed the likes of Future Islands and Freddie Gibbs. Their third release was the first consisting of completely original compositions, showing their prowess as songwriters. Infusing their affinity for hip hop and love of electro-jazz, BBNG carefully crafted their unique sound that culminated in their latest release Sour Soul. The album, a collaboration with Wu Tang legend Ghostface Killah, showed BBNG’s prowess as original hip hop producers, providing the perfect setting for the Wu Tang legend to flex his lyrical muscles.
Badbadnotgood is solidly the best fusion jazz in the industry right now, and definitely not a show you want to miss. Make sure you check them out!
