Concert Review: Wild Child at Walter’s Downtown

Houston produces some mighty fine musicians with the likes of Buxton and Wild Child, and Walter’s Downtown welcomed them home with open arms.
The intimate venue opened doors at 7:30 p.m. on the dot for a line that was patiently waiting outside in the muggy Houston heat.
I went to this show solo, something that I have become more comfortable doing the older I get; no fuss, no frills — it is just me, my camera, and the music.

Houston’s most handsome band, Buxton, provided 10 psychedelic, honky-tonk, and indie rock tunes for a lively crowd. The boys all had their favorite bar beverages in hand, while lead singer, Sergio Trevino, traded his for a Topo Chico due to feeling a little under the weather.
That didn’t stop the band or the crowd from jamming and dancing their little hearts out. After performing most of their newest album, Half A Native, about half of the crowd kept yellling, “Who are you guys? What is your band’s name?” With a sheepish smiles, Trevino would reply, “We are Buxton! Thank you guys so much.”
The crowd was still buzzed from Buxton’s performances which was the perfect set up for what everyone was waiting for, Wild Child.

Starting right on time, the 7 members of Wild Child graced their presence with huge smiles from ear to ear. Their excitement for being in Houston and performing at Walter’s was a huge given.
Kelsey and Alexander engaged the crowd with oldie but goodie sing-a-long tunes from their previous albums, even giving the lucky fans in the front row a chance to jump in with the lyrics, and ended the show with a 3 song encore, including my personal favorite song from Fools, “Reno.”

These guys left the crowd casting a huge happy light from the stage to the exit doors of Walter’s. Throughout all of my years of attending shows, I must say that Wild Child has one of the greatest aesthetics both physically and musically. They radiate beauty both inside and out, a family togetherness with each other and their audience, and an undeniable love for music.
