Shakira and Miley Start Off 2023 Strong

Written by on February 2, 2023

With 2022 ending, a new year of music begins! Shakira and Miley Cyrus demonstrated exceptional artistic skills with their latest singles and collaborations. We will discuss their most recent releases, backstory, and what is yet to come from these stellar artists!

Starting with Shakira, she collaborated with Bizarrap on her recent release “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” on Jan. 11. The single quickly began to hit the top of the charts. In this song, she called out ex-boyfriend Gerard Piqué’s infidelity and his new girlfriend Clara Chía. The rumors of infidelity have been the title of many headlines. Now we are able to see Shakira’s point of view on the situation.

Lyrically it is so well put together it is storytelling in its finest form. Shakira shows that she will not let this situation put her down and knows her worth. Let us analyze some of the lyrics:

“No quiero otra decepción

Tanto que te las das de campeón

Y cuando te necesitaba

Diste tu peor version”

“Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” by Shakira and Bizarrap

“I don’t want another disappointment

So much talk of being a champion

And when I needed you

You gave me the worst version of you”

“Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” by Shakira and Bizarrap (English Translation)

We see her conclude that what Piqué says he is isn’t who he truly is. Throughout the song, we see her move on from him and make clever word plays in certain lines, such as the following:

“Yo solo hago música, perdón que te salpique”

“Tiene nombre de persona buena

Claramente

No es como suena”

“Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” by Shakira and Bizarrap

“I only make music, sorry if it splashes you”

“She’s got the name of a good person

Clearly

It’s not how it sounds”

“Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” by Shakira and Bizarrap (English Translation)

“Salpique” means “to splash,” but she pauses between the word emphasizing “Piqué” as a call out to her cheating ex. She does the same with the word “Claramente,” which means “clearly,” to emphasize “Clara,” referring to her ex’s current girlfriend. It is truly a juicy piece of lyricism, and that is just scratching the surface!

Another set of compelling lyrics would be the following:

“Yo valgo por dos de 22

Cambiaste un Ferrari por un Twingo

Cambiaste un Rolex por un Casio”

“Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” by Shakira and Bizarrap

“I’m worth two 22-year-olds

You traded in a Ferrari for a Twingo

You traded in a Rolex for a Casio”

“Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” by Shakira and Bizarrap (English Translation)

The first line hints at Chía, as Piqué started dating her when she was 22 years old. It also references Piqué’s goal celebration, where he shows a two with both hands- an allusion to Shakira’s and Piqué’s birthdays on February 2nd. The second and third line compares Chía to a cheaper and less prestigious version of herself.

This song has elevated Shakira in the public eye once more, with the song trending on all platforms. The music video now has millions of views that continue to increase daily. Rumors have started of other possible collaborations, but nothing has been confirmed yet. We look forward to seeing more from Shakira!

Miley Cyrus released the single “Flowers”, which climbed up the charts fast! The song speaks about her past relationship with her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. She released the track on his birthday (Jan. 13) and the music video was released the same day. Let’s dive in!

Throughout the song, Cyrus expresses that while her relationship has ended, she can love herself better than anyone. “Flowers” lyrics mirror the lyrics of Bruno Mars’ song “When I Was Your Man”, which Hemsworth supposedly once dedicated to Cyrus in 2013. Let us see the comparison:

“I can buy myself flowers

Write my name in the sand

Talk to myself for hours

Say things you don’t understand

I can take myself dancing

And I can hold my own hand”

“Flowers” by Miley Cyrus

“I should’ve bought you flowers

And held your hand

Shoulda gave you all my hours

When I had the chance

Take you to every party

‘Cause all you wanted to do was dance”

“When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars

There is a clear parallel between both songs. We see Cyrus taking control of the narrative and embracing self-love to move on from the failed relationship. In the music video, we also see references to Cyrus’s independence, with the entire music video being filmed of Cyrus having fun by herself. Cyrus is to release her highly-anticipated eighth studio album Endless Summer Vacation on March 10.

As you can see, there is a clear theme here with both Shakira’s and Cyrus’s releases. While both songs are unique, each represents its perspective and story. January was a great month for both artists, so keep an eye out for more coming from them!
