Mala Luna Artist Spotlight: Lil Wayne
Written by Tiffany Noviski on October 23, 2017
Few rappers can make listeners bust out laughing during a song. Lil Wayne possesses the rare talent of crafting clever, relevant lyrics that hype, puzzle and amuse listeners. Gems such as “Real G’s move in silence like lasagna” from “6 Foot 7 Foot” featured on his 2011 album Tha Carter IV and “Got Spring hatin’ on me ‘cause I ain’t never sprung, winter hatin’ on me ‘cause I’m colder than y’all and I will never, I will never, I will never fall” from “Mr. Carter” on the 2008 Tha Carter III are simply a few examples. What are your favorite Lil Wayne hooks?
There are many to choose from as Lil Wayne has a discography beginning in 1999 with his debut album The Block is Hot. His career began much earlier though at the juvenile age of nine (when he still probably displayed his own teeth). It began in 1991 when he joined Cash Money Records. His first nationwide attention came in 1998 when he was featured in Juvenile’s “Back That Azz Up”. In that iconic track Lil Wayne encourages ladies to wobble before wobbling was the iconic line dance that it is today.
Today Lil Wayne is maintaining his hype man, feature artist status with recent tracks such as DJ Khaled’s “I’m the One” also featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo, and Chance the Rapper. Never one to simply be a hype man, feature artist he has also recently dropped four new tracks off of Young Money Records. “Loyalty” featuring L.A.T. (Produced byChefboy’RT@), “Magnolia” (Freestyle), “Fireworks” (Produced by :Mike Will Made It), “Mula Gang” (Produced by R !O, Kamo & Kaliphat). “Fireworks” is aptly titled as these tracks were released on July 5th.
Lil Wayne will likely perform these new songs, in addition to his other countless hits on Saturday, October 28th in San Antonio, Texas at the Mala Luna Music Festival.
In addition to being a rapper, singer and songwriter, Lil Wayne is also a record executive, having founded Young Money Entertainment in 2005. Young Money Entertainment is located in Lil Wayne’s birthplace, New Orleans, Louisiana. They feature artists such as Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga. In March 2017, Lil Wayne announced the advent of Young Money Radio on Dash, where Young Money artists, including Lil Wayne, are featured. Out of those artists who would you most like to hear?
Lil Wayne has also had his legal issues – from civil to criminal. He has been the plaintiff and the defendant. Currently, according to Bet.com, he’s a plaintiff in a suit involving Birdman for $40 million in damages. In 2010, he did an eight month stint for criminal possession of a gun. No worries, though, he “got through that sentence like a subject and a predicate” as he says in his song “6 Foot 7 Foot”. Never boring in life or music, Lil Wayne is an artist you do not want to miss at Mala Luna Music Festival.
