Mala Luna Spotlight: Rich The Kid
Written by Nsikan Inyang on October 26, 2018
Dimitri Leslie Roger AKA Rich the Kid signed with interscope records on June, 2017. He released his breakout album The World Is Yours less than a year later on March 30, 2018. Rich the Kid grew up listening to the “usual suspects,” Nas, Jay-Z, 2Pac, Notorious B.I.G. & 50 Cent and was influenced by their music and their lifestyles. At the age of 17, he was arrested for breaking into vehicles. After five months in jail, he came out on probation. Maybe it was the music or maybe it was his family life, Rich’s parents divorced early in his life. His mom moved to Atlanta while his dad stayed in New York. Consequently, Rich The Kid grew up in Queens, New York, then moved to Atlanta with his mom when he was 13.
Before Rich the Kid got his big break in music he was working at Wendy’s. He didn’t care for the job and would frequently show up stoned, which of course lead to his firing. That was the last job Rich had before he decided to try rap full fledged. Rich The Kid since has worked with artists such as Lil Baby, Jay Critch, Offset, Preme, and many more. He is best known for his breakout hits “Plug Walk” and “New Freezer” ft. Kendrick Lamar.
“New Freezer” released in 2017 and has over 38 million views on the internet. Rich claims the hit song only took him only 10-12 mins to make. Following the release of the track, the viral New Freezer Challenge took over the internet. In addition to his success as a rapper, he has been successful as an entrepreneur by starting his own label, Rich Forever. Two major artists that he has signed are Jay Critch and Famous Dex. The parent company to Rich Forever Music is 300 Entertainment.
On June 15th, Rich the Kid was attacked and robbed at his LA home. He was at home with his girlfriend during the robbery. There were no suspects or arrests and Rich was hospitalized. Since then, he has laid low on the antics and really focused on the music and his brand. Head out to Mala Luna on Oct. 27th to check him out live.
